Derwent Water Marina is an approved RYA Training Centre. Bridge the gap between small boats and yachts with our keelboat courses. The RYA Level 1 Keelboat Course is designed for complete beginners teaching you how to leave and return and sail in all directions. The course will be taught by one of our professional RYA instructors in a friendly, safe and practical manner in our Hawk 20 Keelboat.

What is a Keelboat?
Keelboats are the largest of the small sailing boats and designed to be sailed by two or more people. They tend to be dryer and more stable than dinghies and multihulls, due to the weighted keel under the hull which reduces the likelihood of the boat capsizing. In some designs the keel can be raised making it easier to store and transport.
You will find many of the same controls as on a dinghy, but with extra equipment you’d find on sailing yachts, such as winches. Keelboats bridge the gap between small boats and cruisers, offering the benefits of both to beginners learning to sail.

- RYA Qualified Instructor
- The course is run over 2 days from 09.30 to 5.00pm and consists of 2 x 4 hour sessions per day
- Maximum group size 6
- Minimum group size 3 (please see conditions below)
- The minimum age on the Adult scheme is 16 years. Under 16’s can follow the Youth Sailing Scheme
- No previous experience required but a reasonable level of fitness and mobility required
- Wetsuits provided, please bring wetsuit shoes or old trainers
- Changing rooms and showers available (£1 coin required for a hot shower)
- Parking is available for the duration of the course
- Arrive at least 20 mins before the course starts.
- Sessions will only be cancelled in the event of extreme weather conditions (Please note – rain is not an extreme weather condition)
Booking Terms and Conditions
- Full payment required at time of booking.
- Bookings are non-refundable once made.
- If the minimum number of participates is not met, we reserve the right to cancel, offer an alternative date or run it as a private session (additional cost for this).
- If we cancel the session all monies will be refunded.
- Health declaration forms must be completed and returned before attending the session.
