Derwent Water Marina is an approved RYA Training Centre. The RYA Youth Sailing Scheme is aimed at under 16’s wanting to get into the sport of sailing.
This course will aim to work through the different stages of the Youth Sailing Scheme. It is open to complete beginners starting out on the scheme or those that have already achieved 1 or more of the stages. Students will be taught by one of our professional RYA instructors in a friendly, safe and practical manner in a mix of single and double handed sailing boats.

RYA Youth Scheme Stages
Stage 1
An introduction to the parts of the boat and the basic principles of how to get a boat sailing.
Stage 2
Develop the sailing skills needed to sail around a course tacking, gybing and controlling boat speed.
Stage 3
Develop the sailing skills needed to sail around a course tacking, gybing and controlling boat speed.
Stage 4
Develop the sailing skills needed to sail around a course tacking, gybing and controlling boat speed.
Certificates
Instructors will sign off each new skill learned and a certificate issued for stage achieved. These can be used in other areas of study or activities such as PE at school or the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.
Key Information

- The course is run over 4 days from 09.30 to 5.00pm and consists of 2 x 4 hour sessions per day
- Maximum group size 6
- Minimum group size 3 (please see conditions below)
- Our Youth courses are aimed at children aged 10 years to 15 years (16 and over can book on the Adult scheme). For children aged under 10 years please contact us regarding Private Group lessons
- No previous experience required but a reasonable level of fitness and mobility required
- Wetsuits provided, please bring wetsuit shoes or old trainers
- Changing rooms and showers available (£1 coin required for a hot shower)
- Parking is available for the duration of the course
- Arrive at least 20 mins before the course starts
- Sessions will only be cancelled in the event of extreme weather conditions (Please note – rain is not an extreme weather condition).
Private Booking
We can also offer Adult and Youth Sailing Courses as a Private booking. For families with children below the course minimum age requirement you will need to book a private group session. Please complete the Enquiry Form and select ‘Private Group Session’, entering your details (including children’s ages) and preferred date(s) and we will check availability and get back to you with a quote.
Booking Terms and Conditions
- Full payment required at time of booking.
- Bookings are non-refundable once made.
- If the minimum number of participates is not met, we reserve the right to cancel, offer an alternative date or run it as a private session (additional cost for this).
- If we cancel the session all monies will be refunded.
- Health declaration forms must be completed and returned before attending the session.
